Luigi Amedeo di Savoia

The photographs which document the expeditions organised and led by Luigi Amedeo di Savoia, Duke of the Abruzzi, to Alaska, Ruwenzori and Karakorum are conserved in the Vittorio Sella archives. This photographic series includes the documentation recording the expedition to the North Pole (1899-1900) and to the Uebi-Scebeli region of Somalia (1928-1929) where in 1920 the Duke had set up a flourishing farming community, devoting himself at the same time to the exploration of the river of the same name, and reaching its sources in Ethiopia in 1929. The Sella Foundation also possesses various short films about Somalia.
